Fast billing at the shop counter
A queue at the counter costs sales. These habits make every bill take seconds, and keep the cash drawer honest at night.
1. Put barcodes to work
Most packed goods already carry a barcode (EAN-13, the 13-digit number under the lines). The first time you sell an item, scan it, type its name and price on the line, and save the bill. The code is remembered, so the next scan adds the item at once with its price and GST rate.
- USB or Bluetooth scanner: it types the code and presses Enter like a keyboard. Click in the search box once and keep scanning. Most cheap scanners work without any setting.
- Phone camera: on Android, Chrome and Edge can read barcodes. Press "Scan with camera", allow the camera once, and hold each pack in the picture. Items are added as they are read.
- Loose items (vegetables, sweets, hardware by weight): give them a short code of your own, such as 101 for potato, and type it. Use a quantity like 0.75 for 750 g.
2. Get the payment right
- Cash: type the note the customer gives you (for example 500). The screen shows "Give back ₹…" in large green letters, or "Still to pay" in red when the money is short.
- UPI: choose UPI and turn the screen towards the customer. The QR code already holds the exact amount, so there is no typing mistake. Wait for the payment message on your own phone or speaker before saving; a screenshot shown by a customer is not proof.
- Card: choose Card so the day total keeps card money apart from cash.
3. Close the day in two minutes
- Press Today’s sales. It shows the number of bills and the totals for cash, UPI and card.
- Count the cash in the drawer. Take away the opening cash you kept for change. What remains should match the cash line.
- Match the UPI line with your bank or UPI app’s day statement.
- If something does not match, open Saved bills, search by number, and check the last few bills.
4. Small habits that save time
- Keep the counter in one browser on one device, so the bill numbers run in one series (POS/26-27/0001 onwards).
- Press Save a backup file under My data once a week, or switch on auto-save to a folder on a computer.
- Large cash sales have limits under the Income Tax law (receiving ₹2,00,000 or more in cash from one person in a day or for one transaction is not allowed). See cash sale limits.
